Onyx & backlighting

Bring natural stone into the light.

Explore the depth and movement of onyx in a distinctive interior feature. Start with the actual stone, the setting and the way you want light to become part of the design.

Consider the whole space

Let the selected stone lead.

Onyx can take on a different presence when illuminated. The selected slab and a lighting sample matter more than a generic image when deciding how a feature will look.

  • Consider colour and natural movement
  • View the material in the intended lighting direction
  • Discuss the scale and composition of the feature

A few useful details

Choose with the full picture in mind.

A focal point, thoughtfully placed.

A wall panel, fireplace setting or custom decorative piece can give stone room to stand out. Share the intended location so the team can discuss suitability and fabrication.

  • Feature panels and interior statements
  • Fireplace and display settings
  • Custom onyx pieces reviewed for their intended use

Plan the light as carefully as the stone.

A backlit feature needs early discussion of the support, lighting arrangement, access and surrounding finishes. The stonework must be coordinated with the people responsible for the lighting and electrical work.

  • Review the supporting conditions
  • Discuss a representative lighting test
  • Allow for access and maintenance
  • Confirm responsibility for each part of the installation

Distinctive stone deserves an informed choice.

Onyx is not a universal substitute for a daily-use kitchen worktop. Its suitability and care need to be discussed for the specific stone and application.

  • Match the material to the intended use
  • Understand cleaning and protection needs
  • Confirm the fabrication details before committing

A little clarity

Questions, answered.

Useful details before you take the next step.

Ask the team
Can any piece of onyx be backlit?

Do not assume the result from a photograph. The selected stone, its thickness and the proposed light need to be reviewed together to understand the effect.

Do you provide the electrical work?

Electrical work is not promised as part of the stonework. The responsibilities for lighting, power, access and installation must be agreed for the specific project.

Can I use onyx for a kitchen countertop?

Onyx should not be treated as a general-purpose, low-care alternative to quartz. Tell us how you want to use it so the specific material and its limitations can be discussed.

What should I send for a backlit feature?

Share a photo or drawing of the location, approximate dimensions and the effect you like. Include any information already available about lighting and the supporting structure.
